CXL Presents: In Her Shoes - Mamie Hughes.
Join us for a conversation with Mamie Hughes, one of CX's original chartered members from the founding in 1980.
MAMIE HUGHES
Founding Member of the Central Exchange and Former Jackson County Legislator
An active member of the Panel of American Women and advocate for equality, Mrs. Hughes often makes presentations to groups about how discrimination, racism, and bigotry have affected lives, noting that “there’s work that still needs to be done.”
In her commitment to the community, she pushed for an increase in economic development in the 18th & Vine District, serves as a member Emeritus on the board of the Samuel U. Rodgers Community Health Center, and serves on the advisory boards of Friendship House/Catherine’s Place and the Historic Jazz Foundation. As Ombudsman for the Bruce R. Watkins Drive, she is also recognized as a woman who has “changed the heart of the city.”
A founding member of the Central Exchange, a charter member of the Jackson County Legislature, a member of the Women’s Public Service Network and the Missouri Holocaust Education and Awareness Commission, Mrs. Hughes served as Chair of the Mid-America Regional Council and was involved in the plan to install immediate emergency services and aided in establishing the “Meals on Wheels” program.
Mamie Hughes is one of the only women in Kansas City who actually has a bridge named after her. During the 71 Highway road construction, her assistance with negotiations on behalf of the residents within the areas inspired the city to come together to make the project successful. She calls it a “people bridge.” It’s for all of us and signifies people closing lines.
