SUMMARY:IN-PERSON | Managing Up Without Burning Out | Boundaries\, Belonging\, and Sustainable Influence
DESCRIPTION:Managing up is not just about handling one hard conversation well\; it is about building a way of working that protects your credibility\, energy\, and integrity over time. In this final session\, attendees will identify the patterns that repeatedly drain them\, clarify the boundaries they need\, and develop a more sustainable leadership approach to working with people above them on the org chart. The session also explores how belonging changes what people are willing to say\, what they stay silent about\, and what kind of leader they believe they are allowed to become.\n\n \nAttendees will leave with:\n\n\n	\n	A clearer sense of the patterns that create burnout\, resentment\, or self-silencing in their work.\n	\n	\n	A personal leadership boundary plan that identifies what they will accept\, what they will question\, and what they will no longer carry alone.\n	\n	\n	One proactive communication habit they can build to reduce future friction and strengthen trust with key colleagues.\n	\n	\n	A concrete commitment for leading with more clarity\, steadiness\, and self-respect.\n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSeries note: Participants will get the most from this series if they bring a laptop or tablet so they can complete the worksheets digitally during the session and leave with tools they can actually use right away. Printed handouts will also be available for anyone who prefers paper or would rather think on the page.\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCeleste Carlson\, MBA\, CNP\, is the founder and CEO of BoardSpark and Growing Good Consulting\, and a lifelong believer that strong boards can change what's possible for communities. With more than 25 years in the human service sector\, she has worked alongside nonprofit leaders\, funders\, and community champions across small towns and cities\, turning big-picture vision into practical\, step-by-step action.\n\nA Kansas native now living in Kansas City\, Celeste brings a grounded\, real-world perspective to her work. She spent a decade as a community foundation program officer\, seeing firsthand that organizations with clear\, engaged boards become magnets for resources of all kinds. She has also led fundraising efforts in volunteer leadership roles\, giving her a front-row view of what boards and advocates need to confidently open doors\, make introductions\, and champion the missions they care about.\n\nCeleste holds an MBA and a Certificate in Nonprofit Innovation from UMKC. She combines formal training with decades of lived experience to synthesize complex ideas about governance\, strategy\, and fundraising into tools that feel doable instead of overwhelming. BoardSpark including the No-Ask Fundraising Deck and The Empowered Boardroom reflects her commitment to helping nonprofit CEOs and boards lead with clarity\, confidence\, and shared responsibility.\n\nBeyond her professional roles\, Celeste is a mom\, a wife\, and a community-minded neighbor who understands the juggling act nonprofit leaders live every day. She cares deeply about making board work more practical\, more human\, and more effective especially for organizations that may not have a big back office\, but do have a big vision for their community.
