Skin's Cancerous Glow: 5 secrets to identify and prevent skin cancer

Skin cancer is rising at an epidemic rate. It is 3 X more common than all other skin cancers combined. It is one of the only cancers still increasing in 2016. Why? It must be a secret if it isn't getting better because humans are evolving to get 'better.'

This talk will discuss the most common types of skin cancer, where and why people desire a tan and 5 secrets to prevent skin cancer. There will photos to show the destruction skin cancer can cause (spoiler alert...cancer can leave some ugly holes and scars)

Brian Matthys, DO is a graduate of Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences. Postgraduate studies followed at Ohio University and completed in 2000. He is an Associate Clinical Professor of Dermatology in the Department of Internal Medicine at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences.

Dr. Matthys is the founder and Chief Medical Officer of Sunflower Dermatology and Medical Day Spa whose mission is  better skin for a better life®

Dr. Matthys is a member and past president of Kansas City Dermatologic Society.  He is also a member of  the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Society for Photobiology, and the American Society for Mohs Surgery.

Dr. Matthys is a participant of Northland Healthcare Access, whose purpose is to provide care to the under or uninsured living in the Northland of Kansas City Missouri.  He is also a past member on the Board of Directors of the Jellybean Conspiracy, a theater of kindness whose mission is to include the gifts and creativity of children and young adults with disabilities within the structure of a theatrical play.  Dr. Matthys is co-founder of Fair and Fashionable™, a 501 (c) 3 charitable organization created to transform the belief that tanned skin is healthy, beautiful and in-style.

Dr. Matthys is the creator of eco-sport® sun protection products and UV INDEX app aimed to create awareness about sun protection and skin cancer avoidance using the UV INDEX.  He is creator of AVOIDTHEBURN®.com which educates on these topics.

Dr. Matthys is the senior advisor for North America for First Derm, powered by iDoc24, a digital health company using tele-dermatology to increase the availability of board certified dermatologic care to the world.  Dr. Matthys also participates with DermatologistOnCall®, a virtual health care solution making accessibility to board certified dermatologists easier, faster and more convenient.

Dr. Matthys is married with one daughter and enjoys travel, guitar and antique cars.
