CANCELLED - will be rescheduled - CXS | Ageism in Healthcare: Current & Future Considerations with Karen Wheeler
This program will offer information, research findings, and strategies in which we, older adults and family members can employ to offset ageism. We will discuss the extent to which ageism affects the quality of health care today. Ageism is defined as the intentional and/or subconscious discrimination against elderly people. Despite the prevalence of ageism, we are in a position to be able to offset prejudice against the elderly and improve the quality of health care for older adults by educating ourselves, our families, and health care providers about the effects of ageism and by advocating for the delivery of unbiased care. Karen Wheeler will:
- Define ageism and how it is most commonly exhibited in today’s healthcare arena
- Identify examples of ageism and the risks and potential outcomes of a prejudiced approach to health care delivery
- Discuss current research findings
- Discuss implications for the future as “the graying of America” increases with limited resources for healthcare provision
