An update from the Commissioner of Education on the Kansas State Board of Education’s vision, outcomes and what’s next for Kansas education.
Dr. Randy Watson began serving as Kansas Commissioner of Education in July after being named to this position by the Kansas State Board of Education in November 2014. During his 34 years in education, Randy has been a classroom teacher at the high school and university levels and an administrator at the building and district levels. Most recently, he served for ten years as Superintendent of McPherson Public Schools USD 418.
Randy holds a bachelor’s degree in history; a Master of Science degree in secondary administration, staff supervision and staff development, and building level certification; and a Doctorate of Education in secondary administration, school law, curriculum development and instructional leadership, and district level certification.
As the state’s chief education officer, Randy provides leadership to the Kansas State Department of Education in carrying out the policies and programs prescribed by the Kansas State Board of Education and in ensuring that oversight and support is provided to assist Kansas schools, educators, and students in achieving their goals.
