CANCELLED | CXS | Now is Found: Redesigning Dementia Care to Remove the Stigma and Restore Dignity
This event has been canceled and will be rescheduled. We apologize for the short notice and will notify all registrants.
Today, it seems that none of us are more than one degree of separation from someone living with dementia. It is important for all of us to understand what quality of life means for people living with Alzheimer's and dementia. When someone is diagnosed with dementia, it is the beginning of a series of devastating losses. By giving back community, connection and control to elders living with dementia and working to remove the stigma, we can minimize those losses and greatly improve quality of life. Dementia experts, Michala Gibson and Mandy Shoemaker will share Now is Found, the upcoming book and film, that brings to life our engagement model and tells the stories of how we have reached the elders in our care. Join us in our mission to remove the stigma of Alzheimer's and dementia and restore dignity in the care of our elders living with it.
We will share strategies for communication and maintaining relationships that can be used immediately in any setting. Attendees will leave having heard the heartwarming stories of people living with dementia and their families, and a new passion for removing the stigma and restoring dignity.
Michala Gibson, RN and Mandy Shoemaker founded Prairie Elder Care in 2014. In just over three years they have created a community of group homes designed to care for people living with dementia that are known as the best in the area. In spring of 2018 they will open The Prairie Farmstead, offering the best of a farm setting and two of their signature group homes in south Overland Park. Their book and film, Now is Found, will also be released in the summer of 2018. Their mission is to reduce the stigma and restore dignity in dementia care by giving back community, connection and control.
