In the winter of 2018, construction of the new 375,000 square foot, nine-story Children’s Research Institute at Children’s Mercy Hospital began at the downtown Adele Hall Campus. Two Kansas City iconic families – the Hall Family Foundation and the Suderland Foundation – joined to donate $150 million to kickstart this project. This is the largest one-time gift ever made to a children’s hospital for pediatric research and will draw top researchers from around the globe to combat some of the toughest medical challenges facing our children today.

Tom Curran, PhD, FRS, Executive Director and Chief Scientific Officer, has gathered a team of internationally recognized scientists and researchers whose sole focus is to serve the needs of children, and their important work is underway.
The Children’s Research Institute is creating an integrated research environment where no boundaries exist between science and medicine. In our quest to find answers to pediatric medicine’s most challenging questions, we are collaborating with physicians, scientists, academic colleagues, philanthropic partners and others within our community, and around the world.
To accomplish our goals, we’re performing the highest quality research using the latest medical technologies. The hospital’s leadership in pediatric genomic medicine and clinical pharmacology is driving research and innovation in nephrology, heart care, cancer treatment and other subspecialties to provide answers for the most difficult cases and challenging pediatric conditions.
Integral to our efforts is our focus on applied informatics, the use of cutting-edge computational capabilities. Informatics helps us provide answers to children and their families by accelerating the process of research, improving the quality of research, making it possible to share data with other researchers, and even making new methods of research available.

Speaker Bio:
Dr. Curran is the Executive Director and Chief Scientific Officer of the Children’s Research Institute at Children’s Mercy Kansas City. He obtained his Ph.D. from the Imperial Cancer Research Fund Laboratories and University College in London, UK, in 1982. He completed postdoctoral training at the Salk Institute in San Diego in 1984 then joined Hoffmann La Roche, rising to the position of Associate Director in 1992. In 1995, he founded the Department of Developmental Neurobiology and the translational Brain Tumor Program at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Dr. Curran became Deputy Scientific Director of the CHOP Research Institute and Professor of Pathology at the University of Pennsylvania in July 2006. Dr. Curran has been elected as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Academy of Microbiology and the Academy of the American Association for Cancer Research. He served as President of the American Association of Cancer Research in 2001 and on the Board of Scientific Advisors of the National Cancer Institute from 2000-2005. He has been elected to the Royal Society, London (2005), the Institute of Medicine (2009), the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2012) and the Academy of the American Association for Cancer Research (2013).
Dr. Curran’s research interests have spanned the areas of molecular biology, cancer research and neurobiology. His laboratory at CHOP focused on pediatric brain tumors, brain development and genomics, concentrating on the goal of finding new treatments for childhood brain tumors. He has published more than 290 research articles that have been cited more than 50,000 times.
Dr. Curran’s leadership of the Children’s Research Institute will build on the hospital’s century-long history in pediatric research and focus future research efforts in four key areas: Pediatric Genomic Medicine, Clinical Pharmacology, Health Services and Outcomes and Health Care Delivery.
