Speaker Bio:
Julie Holmquist is a lawyer, CPA, and mediator specializing in the financial aspect of divorce, separation, and marriage especially for women. She received her JD in 1984, her CPA in 1988, and her mediation certificate in 2003. Julie began her professional career with Deloitte specializing in tax in Kansas City. She transferred to their San Francisco office in 1988 and consulted with prominent Fortune 500 companies and their CEOs on complex tax issues. She returned to Kansas City in 1992 and worked with the Holman Hansen Colville & Coates law firm specializing in estate, tax, and family business planning. In 1994, Julie accepted a position as VP of Finance/Treasurer for a manufacturing company. After serving as in-house director of finance, legal, and human resource for over seven years, Julie opened her own firm in 2001, specializing in tax and mediation. Because of her varied financial background, many divorce lawyers began contacting her to advise on the financial aspects of divorce and to testify as an expert witness on financial issues. Julie became frustrated in witnessing women marginalized and underrepresented in divorce, especially regarding financial matters. As a response, Julie renamed her firm J. Holmquist & Associates and focused on the financial issues of divorce/separation/marriage.
How does this work? Each professional works in his/her area of expertise. Julie handles the financial matters, including preparing the financial discovery, property settlement, support worksheets and related exhibit which support the lawyer’s arguments. The lawyer handles the parenting issues.
Why does this work? 100% of divorce cases have a financial aspect but very few divorce lawyers have a financial background and almost none have a tax background. Therefore, substantial money is left on the table. With this approach, the client receives the most after tax cash as soon as possible.
