DT | Mother in Charge - 11:45 a.m.
The presentation will be about the collaboration between Rosilyn Temple and Jon Brick on the documentary film, Mother In Charge.
Rosilyn is a mother struck by the tragedy of her son’s homicide that takes a stand, seeks justice and changes lives- one family, one community, at a time. Devastated by her son’s tragedy, she changed her life to fight against violence and homicide. Today, she’s making a difference by bringing communities together and changing lives. She’s at every homicide scene in the Kansas City, MO area to bridge the gap between the police department and the community.
Being on a homicide scene is horrific, and at times, chaotic; the sights and sounds of despair is unforgettable. Because of her own experience, Rosilyn is able to provide what is needed at such tragic moments: control of the situation, and most critically, comfort to grieving families. Rosilyn founded the Kansas City chapter of Mothers In Charge, an organization whose mission is violence prevention, education and intervention for youth, young adults, families and community organizations. Rosilyn works together with the Kansas City No Violence Alliance, KCPD, FBI, ATF, the U.S Attorney's Office and the Jackson County Prosecutors Office. She is a powerful and emotional public speaker who gives presentations at a wide range of places to diverse audiences. From rallies in Washington DC to vigils in Kansas City to prisons in Missouri, she preaches about the tragedy of having to bury her own child. When she talks, people listen. She stirs emotions and often members of the audience become teary-eyed.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and Kansas City civic leaders have awarded Rosilyn for her efforts in the community and recognized her as a local hero. She’s proof that with passion, drive, determination and faith, one woman can make a major impact.
