About the Breakfast
Since 2008, the UMKC Pride Breakfast has raised funds to support LGBTQIA students at UMKC and served as a way to show our university’s support of, and commitment to, LGBTQIA students on campus. The Pride Breakfast benefits all scholarships established specifically for LGBTQIA students, including the Pride Empowerment Fund, which provides emergency assistance to students who are experiencing financial difficulty due to loss of family support. Last year, the net total raised was more than $92,000.
Featured Speaker
Greg Louganis
Greg Louganis is widely considered the greatest diver in history. He is the only male to sweep both the 3m and 10m diving events in consecutive Olympic Games (1984 in Los Angeles and 1988 in Seoul), earning a total of five Olympic medals, five World Championship titles and 47 national titles. After the 1988 Olympics, Louganis officially retired from diving and began his acting and speaking career. He appeared in the off-Broadway production of "Jeffrey" in 1993 and was featured in films, television appearances and commercials. In 1994, he wrote about his life experiences in his best-selling autobiography Breaking the Surface, in which he came out as a gay man and publicly revealed his HIV-positive status. The book spent five weeks as The New York Times No. 1 bestseller. In 2015, the documentary on Greg's life titled "Back on Board" has gone on to win multiple awards and can currently be seen on HBO.
