While women are running for office in greater numbers than they have before, we still have tremendous work to do. With only 20% of all members of Congress being women, 22 of the 100 U.S. Senators being female and 84 of the 435 members of the U.S. House, our work is not done.
Enjoy appetizers and join Central Exchange and American Public Square as we host a panel of female mayors to better understanding political issues and the many ways in which they can help shape future outcomes.
Meet the Panelists:
- Peggy Dunn, Mayor of Leawood, KS - Peggy Dunn has been the mayor of Leawood since 1997. Peggy Dunn presides over one of the most covetable suburbs in the city — one known for its schools, neighborhoods, parks and, increasingly, retail attractions like Mission Farms and Park Place. The City of Leawood ranks No. 9 on the Business Journal's Fastest-Growing Cities List.
- Eileen Weir, Mayor of Independence, MO - Mayor Eileen Weir was elected in April, 2014 for a four-year term. Before being elected as the City’s 50th Mayor, and 2nd female Mayor, she served as Independence Councilwoman for the 4th District from 2012-2014.
- Kay Barnes, Former Mayor of Kansas City, MO - Kay Barnes is the former mayor of Kansas City, Missouri. In 1974, she was one of the first two women on the Jackson County Legislature. She was elected to the Kansas City council in 1979. Barnes was the first female mayor of Kansas City. Mayor Barnes has received the most credit for her work in improving Downtown Kansas City and working for beginning the revitalization of the urban core. She is also credited with the Sprint Center arena in Kansas City that opened on October 10, 2007. Kay Barnes is the senior director for university engagement at Park University.
