Brief Bios:
Mayor Kay Barnes is the embodiment of servant leader. She is a nationally recognized consultant and trainer who has developed a unique foundation of learning and experience in education, human resource and organizational development. With over 25 years of professional and volunteer experience interfacing among political, corporate, governmental and not-for-profit sectors in the community to initiate and facilitate positive change she has the strong ability to conceptualize, problem solve, communicate practical alternatives and develop long-term goals.
A native of St. Joseph, Missouri, Mayor Barnes earned a B.S. degree in secondary education from the University of Kansas, Masters degrees in Secondary Education, as well as Public Administration – Organizational Behavior from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She was the president of Kay Waldo, Inc.
One of the first two women on the Jackson County Legislature and elected to the Kansas City council in 1979, Barnes was the first female mayor of Kansas City and has received the most credit for her work in improving Downtown Kansas City and working for initiating the revitalization of the urban core. She is also credited with the Sprint Center arena in Kansas City that opened on October 10, 2007. She was first elected mayor on her birthday in 1999, and re-elected for a second term in 2003. In late 2007, Barnes announced she would run in the Democratic primary for Missouri's 6th congressional district, held by four-term Republican Sam Graves.
Mayor Barnes is the Distinguished Professor and Founding Director for Public Leadership at Park University. She sits on the boards of private and public corporations and was appointed a Fellow of the Dole Institute of Politics, University of Kansas. She has been honored with numerous national and regional awards and recognitions. She is a founding and original member of Central Exchange.
Sandra Mellinger is CEO of Coming of Age Kansas City, a nationally acclaimed civic engagement initiative. Sandra is a graduate of the University of Missouri Sinclair School of Nursing and has worked with a variety of health care entities during her career. She is actively engaged in the community and has served on numerous boards and commissions including the Kansas City, Missouri, Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners; The National World War I Museum and Memorial Board of Trustees; The Harvest Ball Society Board of Directors, the University of Missouri Jefferson Club Board of Trustees and MARC’s KC Community for All Ages coalition, among many others. She is the mother of three children and has five grandchildren. Her interests include public affairs, travel, hiking, reading, the family farm and spending time with family and friends. Sandra is a long time member of Central Exchange.

You Never Can Tell is a group of assorted, changeable (but not interchangeable) women (usually) who just want to take a break, meet a few people they don't know, and just see what happens -- because after all, you never can tell. Anyone who joins us is, by definition, fun, clever, smart . . . and ready to have a good time. You can expect no agenda, which doesn't mean we're topic-less -- and we always have a great lunch.
